Healthy hot chocolate
It’s that time of year when I start to crave hot chocolate. It’s a perfect pick-me-up as the afternoons get shorter and the weather becomes colder. Made the right way, a steaming mug of hot chocolate is not only comforting but nutritious too.
Cacao is packed with antioxidants – up to three times as much as a green tea. It also contains essential minerals including magnesium, calcium, sulphur and zinc and has been shown to help regulate blood pressure and boost the immune system.
250 ml milk of your choice e.g. almond, coconut, organic whole milk (you may need more or less depending on the size of your mug)
1 tablespoon of raw cacao or good quality cocoa powder
A pinch of salt
To this you can add all kinds of flavours – a pinch of cinnamon or ground ginger, a few drops of vanilla or orange extract. My current favourite is rose water and ground cardamom which gives it a delicate, exotic flavour.
Combine the ingredients in a pan and heat gently until warmed through.
I tend not to sweeten mine (gone are the days of marshmallows and whipped cream) but if you prefer yours a bit sweeter, add some honey to your mug.
